England along with Welsh Pitted Together for RWC 2027 in Australia

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The pool stage draw was conducted by sporting legends including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

England together with their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in an identical pool for the 2027 RWC, setting up a highly-anticipated pool stage clash in Australia. Completing the group in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This pairing recalls their memorable meeting in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at England's home ground contributed to the English team's shock group stage elimination.

Key Pool Draws

Ireland and Scotland have likewise been drawn in a pool together, just as the situation from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, they secured a 36-14 victory, with Scotland failing to advance to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Portugal, who each made a strong impression as underdogs in the last World Cup, complete that Pool D.

Significantly, the winners of these two groups are kept apart from defending champions and world number one South Africa before the final, presuming the Springboks win their own group.

Tournament Implications

Should the groups play out in line with the current global standings, further top favourites like the All Blacks and France would also be kept apart from the likes of the English and the Irish until the final.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the remaining highly-seeded nation on the same side of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Tournament Hosts Draw Blockbuster Fixture

Hosts Australia have been drawn together with their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Group A.

The Wallabies will open the World Cup in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee fixture aimed at launch the event.

In other groups, reigning champions South Africa have drawn Italy, the Lelos and Romania. The French team are grouped with Japan, 2031 hosts the USA and Samoa.

Larger Tournament for 2027

Los Pumas will take on the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and Canada as the World Cup expands to twenty-four nations from the twenty who competed in 2023.

This edition will introduce a round of 16 round for the first time in the competition's existence.

Although the winner of Pool F may avoid some of the game's biggest beasts initially, they will have to face the runner-up from Group B – probably the Italians – in the last 16.

A total of four of the other six pool winners will play a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
