One two-month journey around the Land Down Under was terminated days after the fatal incident of an elderly woman who was stranded by the cruise liner on a remote tropical isle.

The passenger had been walking on Lizard Island with other travelers from the cruise ship, but broke off from the group for a rest. The liner sailed away leaving her and came back later that day after the personnel discovered the woman was unaccounted for.

A large-scale rescue mission located her body the subsequent day.

Investigative bodies are looking into the incident, in coordination with law enforcement and the medical examiner.

Chief Executive of the shipping company said that guests and personnel on the vessel were notified that the remainder of the cruise had been cancelled due to the "unfortunate death and earlier engine troubles".

Via official communication, he mentioned that travelers would be provided a full refund, and said the company was working "to organize the travel back of the passengers via specially arranged planes".

Officials also published an updated announcement, and said they had "delivered a order to the Commander" prohibiting any new passengers from entering the liner.

The spokesperson said that they would visit the liner in Cairns upon its return.

The vessel initially left the coastal city on 24 October, and was merely two days into the expedition at the point of the 80-year-old's passing. Lizard Island was the first stop on the itinerary.

Guests on board - who typically pay tens of thousands of money to participate in the expedition - were taken there for a shore visit with the choice of hiking or snorkelling.

The offspring of the elderly passenger said that her family was "shocked and grieved that the liner left Lizard Island after an planned outing without my mum".

Through her comments, she portrayed her mother as an "vigorous octogenarian" who was a affiliate of a bushwalking group.

"Based on limited facts we have been told, it looks that there was a failure of responsibility and common sense," she said.

She continued that she wished the investigation would be able to determine what "the operator should have done that might have preserved Mum's life".
